When I’ve had trouble sleeping, I would have paid any amount of money to resolve it. The watch that helped my finally run 5k in under 30 minutes is at its lowest-ever price

I've been trying to run a 5k in under 30 minutes since 2020 and I finally managed it at the end of last year thanks to the coaching on the Coros Pace 3.

There isn't a huge discount available on the watch (Coros rarely discounts its items heavily) but this is the cheapest it will drop to.

Wearing the watch for several months taught me all about pacing, recovery and how drastically sleep and illness can impact performance.

My partner nabbed the watch immediately once I got an Apple Watch to test, but I very much intend on getting it back when I want to start working on my 10km run times.

I test walking shoes for a living, and few brands have me returning as often as Skechers. If I see a new Skechers release, I have to test it.

This is what happened with the Aero Spark Hands Free Slip-ins Sneaker, which was released a few months ago.

After wearing them for just a couple of weeks, they became my new favorite shoe from the brand.

Usually, I'd expect a longer wait between a shoe's release and a significant discount, but some colorways have been reduced to under $85 on Amazon.

You can get great reductions in the men's shoe in several colorways, but by far the biggest discount can be found in the Navy/Orange style. Remember, discounts vary by size on Amazon.View Deal

These shoes were reduced by 19% in mid-November, before selling out in a matter of hours.

Then, for Black Friday, they enjoyed a 30% discount. I didn't expect them to drop any further, but some styles have been discounted by as much as 37% for Cyber Monday.

I can't imagine this discount will be available for long, so make sure you snap up a pair before they sell out.

I find that Skechers shoes are roomier than other brands, with a wide toe box and built-in arch support that keeps the pressure off my (wonky) big toe joint.

If you have wide feet or bunions, they're a great choice for these two features alone, but that's not all. They're super comfortable as well.

The Aero Spark, in particular, is well-cushioned and has great energy return. This makes it wonderful for hard surfaces like road or pavement, for running and walking alike.

Waking up in the morning has always been a struggle for me.

I've never been someone who can jump out of bed. In fact, I usually spend at least 30 minutes snoozing my alarm.

Nike shoes always have a place in my best walking shoe guide, because it’s one of the best (and oldest) brands out there. And for a Nike shoe to be in its 41st generation is something else, and a shoo-in for the title of best Nike shoe.

The last time I saw a reduction on the Pegasus 41 was in July, when it was down to $84. Now, when you add the code BFRIDAY at checkout, prices are as low as $74.23 on Nike's website.

New Balance makes some of the best walking and running shoes around, and Black Friday is a perfect time to get yourself a pair.

You can find classics like the Fresh Foam X Hierro V8 for a fraction of the retail price in the sales.

I crowned The Hierro V8 as the grippiest shoe in my best walking shoe guide for most of 2024 and half of 2025. It only lost its title to a newly released Danner a couple of months ago.

If you want a grippy tail shoe but don't want to splurge on a new release, this shoe is high-quality, offers an unshakable grip on slippery surfaces, and is supportive enough to be worn on and off trail.

A reminder that prices on Amazon vary by size and colorway, so while 56% off is the best discount I've found, it's always worth digging through the different options to see what else is out there.View Deal

When I tested the Hierro V8, I was pleased by how comfortable and cushioned it was for long walks, despite being designed for trail running.

I like that the protective material of the sole comes up over the toe and high up the sides of the shoe to keep you safe from snags or loose terrain.

This makes them extra durable and suitable for rougher trails, if that's what tickles your fancy.

They're also much lighter than some of the trail walking shoes I've tested, as they are more tailored for speed.

They're still sturdy and supportive like a walking shoe, but are also feather-light underfoot, like a running sneaker.

For a long while, I was positively against the idea of wearing a watch to track my running.

Running, for me, was an escape (in the nicest way possible!) from my five-year-old, where I could immerse myself in nature, and listen to the sounds of birds wading in the river or cooing in a tree.

But then I decided to sign up for a 5K race. And then a 10K.

And, as lovely as it was, the therapeutic sound of nature didn't improve my speed or stop me from hyperventilating when I’d completely overshot my pace or distance.

To get started, I typed in the distance I wanted to run, my goal time and how often I could run into Garmin Run Coach, and it set out daily workout suggestions, from interval training to hill repeats.

I loved that it took the planning off my plate and just told me what to do!

Wearing the Garmin Forerunner 165 has not only improved my running speed and output, but also affected my awareness of my overall health, too, as it shows trends in my heart rate and cardio fitness.

I’m even sleeping better, thanks to my Garmin. Each morning, my watch helpfully gives me a low-down of my health stats, including my sleep score, and recommends how many hours’ sleep I should aim to get that evening to improve my body battery.

So, rather than resisting going to bed each evening as I typically do in a bid to maximise my kid-free time, I’ve been taking my Garmin’s advice and getting to bed earlier—and feeling all the better for it.

The best thing about this Garmin is that it’s simple to use.

The touchscreen is intuitive, whether flicking through your morning stats report, scrolling through a training plan or saving an activity.

There are only five buttons on the device (some models have even fewer) but it was never difficult to navigate. I found myself scrolling through the different settings without having to glance at a manual.

I really enjoy using the connected Garmin app on my phone too—everything syncs seamlessly from the watch, and means I can get really nerdy and explore my stats in detail.

It comes in a nice selection of colourways (I opted for teal) and the strap is super comfy to wear, although I do have to loosen it at night.

Overall, it’s a great entry-level watch and has converted me from a non-wearable runner to a devout Garmin wearer.

It’s no exaggeration to say that one of the main things that helped me stay consistent with exercise was finding a good pair of workout leggings.

Aesthetics aside, these leggings do not budge and they’re breathable, meaning they excel during intense workouts.

It’s worth noting that they’re not completely squat-proof, so I wouldn’t recommend this pair if you’re going to use them for strength training.

Skechers make super comfortable walking shoes. I should know: I've tested six Skechers shoes recently, clocking up 240,000 steps and 45 hours wearing the brand’s shoes.

I tested the Aero Spark Hands Free Slip-ins Sneaker when it came out earlier this year and it didn't disappoint.

I didn't expect to see any discounts on such a new release this Black Friday, but some colorways have already been reduced to under $100 on Amazon.

I like Skechers for many reasons. Its shoes are high-quality—on par with brands like Brooks and Hoka—yet affordable.

Skechers shoes are also great for wide feet. I have a bunion and have come to value a roomy toe box and a bit of extra arch support to take the pressure off my big toe joint.

If you're concerned about discomfort with something in your ears for long periods, I can reassure you that, with the right size, they’re fine to wear all day.

If you like in-ear earbud headphones, they feel much the same.

The signature loop design keeps them snugly seated in the conch of the ear, so you'll find them difficult to knock out by mistake.

I swap between my Loop Switches and listening to music, and find that the Loops are great if I need a little more awareness of my surroundings (like when I’m waiting for a parcel) but don't want to hear the loud, repetitive construction noise coming from my neighbours'.

This shoe might be designed for running, but it has become my go-to for every type of movement.

It’s stable enough for dumbbell workouts, comfy enough for long walks and stylish enough to wear casually.

As it’s a run shoe, it has a lot of cushioning underfoot, which means that it feels bouncy and light when you’re jogging.

I also find that it’s super supportive for my joints, which is useful as I have a long-term knee injury and generally weak knees.

The midsole foam is firm, which helps me feel stable when I move around—useful for someone whose knee regularly gives way.

And as it’s so comfy, I often throw the shoe on for daily walks and errands, so it’s definitely my most-worn footwear.

The company's sneakers are affordable, durable and well-made, putting them in the same league as pricier models from the likes of Brooks, Hoka and Nike.

I tested the Aero Spark Hands Free Slip-ins Sneaker recently and it instantly became my new favorite from the brand.

Why do I like these shoes so much?

They're built like another favorite of mine, the Hoka Clifton, but at a lower price.

The high, sweeping collar and sleek, streamlined design are similar to the Clifton, along with the ultra-comfy cushioning and bounce.

Unlike the Clifton, it has a roomy toe box at the front, which is useful if you have wider feet or bunions.

This lemon-colored sneaker also has the Skechers arch fit feature, which is an extra wad of cushioning in the insole, designed to sit under the arch of the foot.

I find that this helps to align my feet more comfortably in the shoe and relieves pressure on my sensitive big toe joint.

I tested the Max Cushioning Elite 2.0 in 2024 and it remained in my walking shoe guide until only a couple of weeks ago (usurped by a slightly newer, more technical shoe).

However, it is the shoe I reach for when I have to do something quickly, like walk into town or go to a hospital appointment.

When there's a hard surface underfoot, I want the level of cushioning it offers, but sometimes don't need the more heavily-engineered experience that my Brooks or Hoka shoes offer.

I wear them when I don't want to risk getting other shoes mucky or wearing down the soles, but still want to feel just as comfortable.

It’s a great “kick-about” shoe, as my mother would say. Tough, durable and comfortable, and at a price point where it hurts a little less if you spill something on them.

Which dumbbell weight is best for me?

If you're new to weight training and trying to figure out which dumbbell weight to buy, it's best to start light.

I've been weight training for decades and use a range of dumbbells from 20 to 50lbs. I think 10lb dumbbells are a good starting weight for absolute beginners, while those with some experience or a naturally bigger physique could opt for the 15 or 20lb versions.

Traditionally, bodybuilders used low rep ranges with heavy weights to increase muscle bulk. However, that thinking has changed in recent years because doing higher numbers of reps with lighter weights has proved to be just as effective. Increased rep numbers also mean longer workouts which will burn more calories and can improve your overall fitness too.

Once you've bought a pair of dumbbells you'll need some workouts to try. Have a go at this low-impact dumbbell workout or Arnold Schwarzenegger's signature dumbbell workout.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a Hoka addict, having tested several pairs for Fit&Well's guide to the best walking shoes.

The Hoka Transport was the first I tested and is my favorite slip-on shoe. It's designed for hiking and running and is stylish enough to pair with your favorite outfit.

I also tested the Hoka Clifton 9 this year, which I rate as the best shoe for walking on concrete. It's a great option if you work on your feet all day, thanks to its lightweight cushioning.

My favorite Hoka of all time is the Hoka Bondi 8, which sat at the top of my walking shoe guide for a long time (it was replaced in November by my new favorite: the Brooks Glycerin Max, but it was a close run thing).

My colleague, a keen runner, also tested the Hoka Mach 6 earlier this year and gave it a glowing review. He recommends it as an everyday running shoe, great for easy runs and longer sessions.

I rate the Clifton 9 as the best shoe for walking on concrete because it is slightly lighter than the Bondi 8. Its thick cushioning and light weight mean that it's also great for longer runs. View Deal

My colleague is a big fan of the Mach 6, using their pair for both easy sessions, speedwork and longer runs. They're ridiculously light and responsive, making them great for achieving personal bests. If you want a lighter-than-air feeling when you run, these are the shoes for you.

When I tested these shoes, I tried them out on a variety of different terrains. They're tough and protective, despite being sandals, and the rubber outer comes up to cover the toes, heels and sides of the feet, so you don't need to worry about hurting yourself on a rock.

They were a little uncomfortable for me without socks and got slick on the inside (sweat and suncream are a bad combo), so I recommend a thin layer between you and the sandal. They are suitable for use as water shoes and I took them for a paddle in a stream (after removing my socks) and was surprised at how quickly they dried off again.

They have a surprising amount of cushioning underfoot for a sandal too: not quite the same level as a road running shoe, but comparable to some of the trail shoes I've tried. They're also very flexible, meaning you can use them to clamber over rocks or tackle steep slopes.

When I first started covering Black Friday and Cyber Monday there were annual deals on two rowing machines I always looked out for and covered as soon as I saw them. They were discounts on the WaterRower and the Concept2 rowing machine. Both machines are great buys that—to be blunt—will probably outlast your capacity to use them.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic put an end to those annual deals. In this year's coverage of Cyber Monday rowing machine deals I even include the Concept2 at full price, because I know it won't be discounted but at £990 it's still worth a look.

With a higher starting price, I tend to not do the same for WaterRower but—hallelujah!—a WaterRower model has been reduced on Amazon by 20% to £800!

The WaterRower on offer has a driftwood aesthetic, but other than that it's the same machine and includes the S4 monitor and tablet holder. It's a rare saving and not one to pass up.View Deal

The advantage of any WaterRower is its natural feel—you are pulling against water after all. When a colleague reviewed Ergatta (a WaterRower with a built-in screen that requires an ongoing subscription, also £200 off but it costs £2,495) he noted that the "resistance feels smooth and the nylon drive strap is quiet."

He also appreciated that it had smaller dimensions than the Concept2, could be stood on its end against a wall and because it's made of wood it almost becomes a welcome design feature.

WaterRower is also the official rowing machine of British Rowing, which is a notable mark of its quality.

I'm currently testing the New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Trail as a walking shoe and I have to say I'm impressed. It's comfortable, breathable and light for a trail shoe.

It carries a hefty price tag of $200, but if you've had your eye on a pair, Zappos is selling the men's shoe in the Butterscotch/Deep Sea colorway for $100 and the women's for 40% off in Plum Brown/Calcium. This Cyber Monday deal is not to be missed!

I've been testing the FuelCell SuperComp Trail for a couple of weeks and they've handled the icy and muddy pavements I've been contending with on my dog walks. I find it hard to keep my balance sometimes, so a sole with plenty of grip goes a long way for me, especially in walking shoes.

The SuperComp Trail is designed for trail running, so I've not been using them to their full potential, but I can confirm that they're very comfortable for walking, especially on uneven and slippery terrain.

These shoes aren't fully waterproof, but can handle a bit of damp underfoot or drizzly rain. There's always a trade-off between waterproofing and breathability, and the design of this shoe leans toward the latter.

Trail shoes tend to be heavy, but these are remarkably lightweight, coming in at 8.8 oz for the men's.

Why I like kettlebells

Unlike dumbbells, kettlebells have an off-center weight distribution, meaning it challenges your body in different ways. They engage your core stabilization and your proprioception (bodily awareness) more intensely. As someone who is naturally clumsy, kettlebell workouts have significantly improved my balance, control and overall strength.

Kettlebells are fantastic for lots of strength-building exercises. I like to add them to a glute bridge, holding a kettlebell over my hips to increase the resistance. I also do goblet squats and squat thrusters holding a 20kg (44lb) kettlebell, then switch to a lighter weight for upper-body exercises.

When it comes to materials, cast iron is unbeatable for durability. I own five cast iron kettlebells of various weights and I love the slender handles they generally feature—perfect for small hands (I wear size XS gloves).

Over the years, I've struggled gripping the larger-handled plastic or vinyl kettlebells usually found at gyms as I can't wrap my little digits around them properly, whereas my cast-iron kettlebells fit comfortably and securely in my hands.

Getting fit is simple, right? You just need to move more and eat well.

The problem with that advice is that it's way too broad. Most people have specific ideas of what they mean by getting fit. Maybe it's putting on muscle, improving cardio health, losing weight or even boosting your balance. But fitness certainly isn't a one-size-fits-all.

As a fitness editor, I spend a lot of my time reading about the tools that have helped people get healthy and reach their fitness goals. 1. Walking treadmill

When COVID-19 hit in 2020 I was going to a group training gym and had recently lost 100 pounds. I was terrified that all my progress would be wiped when the gym closed but I was also determined not to let that happen.

I had been lifting and running a lot in preparation for a Spartan obstacle course race. I knew I needed to keep up my workout routine to maintain the strength and endurance I had built.

Hoka makes excellent shoes that are perfect for all sorts of athletic activities. I've been fortunate enough to test several models, and every single one has made it into my guide to the best walking shoes.

The Hoka Bondi 8 topped the list for most of 2024, only recently supplanted by my new favorite the Brooks Glycerin Max. I also tested the Hoka Clifton 9, which I rate as the best shoe for walking on concrete, and the Hoka Transport, which is my favorite slip-on shoe.

All of these models have been reduced in the Black Friday fitness sales, which is excellent news if you need a new running or walking shoe. But which one should you choose?

Black Friday Hoka deals

The Bondi 8 is one of my favorite walking shoes because it is chunky and supportive while remaining flexible, plus it has a soft, breathable upper. It has a wider crash pad than the other Hoka shoes, giving it a “walking on air” feeling, even if you are clocking up the miles on hard surfaces. Which Hoka should you buy?

Both the Clifton 9 and Bondi 8 are designed to be road running shoes, but if you're a keen runner, I think the Clifton 9 would be a better choice of the two.

When running in the Bondi 8, I found the wide crash pad (which I love as a walker) tended to clip the side of my leading leg. The Clifton 9 is a slimmer shoe and doesn’t have this problem. The Clifton 9 also comes further up the back of the heel and is marginally lighter than the Bondi 8, making it good for speed runs.

The Transport is a hybrid hiking and running shoe, with a more rigid sole and stiff upper, so it's well-suited to rough terrain. There's less cushioning in the shoe, but stacked sneakers (like the Bondi) can make you unstable when you're hiking, which is why it's better to opt for something with stability and grip like the Transport.

Despite having less cushioning and bounce, the Transport is still comfortable and the toggle fastening makes it easy to get on and off. It's more of an everyday sneaker than the other Hokas I've tested, too, with an understated style that some people might prefer.

It's rare to see Black Friday discounts on shoes in the same year that they're released, but this year Nike has knocked 30% off some styles. Specifically, it's reduced the Nike Pegasus 41s, which are some of the best walking shoes I've tested.

You can get the women's shoes in a black-and-white colorway for $98 and the men's shoes in black, white and red for the same price. Several other styles also carry discounts, but stock is more spotty, so you might not find your size in the style you want. To get the discount add the coupon code "BFRIDAY" at checkout.

Additionally, you can find the previous generation, the Women's Nike Pegasus 40, for $89.99 at Footlocker. The men's shoe remains at the full price of $130. When I first started running, I struggled to find a pair of shorts I felt comfortable in. Whether I was at the gym or outside, I would often wear leggings even though I overheated quickly.

I'm a fitness editor who looks closely at the Black Friday sales every year, but I know most people are too busy to do that and there are plenty of "Black Friday is just a scam" hot takes out there so I thought I'd start this live coverage by putting in my two cents.

Is it worth shopping during Black Friday?

Yes. Period.

When I can, I wait to make my major purchases over Black Friday. This year I bought a TV and last year I bought my wife her Christmas gift—a Garmin Forerunner 255—and got both for significantly less than I would have if I had bought at any other time of year.

I'm going back over the Amazon Black Friday, now that it's—y'know—Black Friday to make sure I haven't missed anything big. While I work on it, here's my shortlist:

Fitbit Inspire 3 for $69.95: You want an easy-to-use step tracker? Fitbit's entry-level band is hard to beat.
CAP Barbell Dumbbell Set with Rack for $159.99: Adjustable dumbbells are great space savers, but if you're setting up a gym in your garage and want to do dynamic functional exercises like dumbbell snatches, I think a rack of hex dumbbells are a better buy.
Hydro Flask water bottle for $32.99: stainless steel with a straw lid—it's a perfect water bottle for the gym.
Garmin Forerunner 55 for $149: while it's always tempting to buy the more expensive Garmins, this entry-level running watch will help to guide the running of almost everyone. I'd happily use this model and my marathon PR is 3hr 6min.
TRX Go for $97.95: I own one of these and happily recommend it. You really can train any muscle, there are a wealth of free workouts to follow online, and it can be tucked away in a draw.

💪 Resistance band deals I'm shopping

Every household should own resistance bands. They help build muscle and are useful for rehabbing after injuries and warming up. Plus, they are easy to store. There are always cheap options available, but I like to play it safe by buying from name brands, rather than the whack-a-mole pseudo-brands. Here are the resistance band deals from trusted brands.

The toe box is nice and roomy and the upper is soft and flexible, making for a comfortable experience even when walking on hard surfaces like concrete. The upper is also super breathable, with an engineered warp-knit upper, which allows your feet to breathe, even on hot days. Unfortunately, this breathability does there's little water resistance.

The Glycerin 21 is 0.3 oz lighter than the Glycerin 20, but also has a 2mm increased stack height compared to the previous generation (I love a high-stack shoe). All of these factors make the Glycerin 21 a great walking (or running) shoe, and if you're looking for some new shoes, with a nice discount on Amazon, why wouldn't you?

It takes a lot to make it on my list of the best walking shoe guide, but this pair from New Balance was a shoo-in.

That's because, in my experience, it's hard to find shoes with genuinely grippy soles, with even some of the best trail shoes slipping underfoot in wet weather. These shoes are designed for trail running but work just as well when walking on slick concrete.

They seem popular too, because reductions of 20% on men's and women's models I spotted at REI yesterday, November 26, have disappeared.

Thankfully, Amazon has reduced the price by up to 25% (discount varies by size).

The Vibram outsole on these is unbeatable, thanks to the traction lug design, and it wraps over the toe and side of the foot to offer protection from brambles and rocks. Some of the other trail shoes I've tested have been quite heavy but at 8.9 oz (women's) and 11.2 oz (men's ), the Fresh Foam X Hierro V8 is a lightweight option. View Deal

I rated these shoes 4 out of 5 stars when I tested them early this year. The tongue is attached to the rest of the shoe by elastic tabs, which means that the upper rolls and flexes with your foot as you walk. I wasn't a huge fan of this feature, as it left gaps for rain to get in, but it does make for a super flexible shoe.

Ultra-cushioned shoes dominate the market at the moment, but they're not ideal for lifting heavy weights. I'm a certified trainer and I'd argue that most serious strength training sessions would benefit from a shoe that's much closer to the ground—like the NOBULL Outwork, which is currently reduced by 70%.

I have wide feet and I finally found a popular running shoe that actually fits—and it's reduced on Amazon right now

Not only am I runner, I spend a lot of time writing about shoes and other athletic gear, but I have a secret. My wide feet rarely fit the most popular shoes.

I have been wearing Altra running shoes for six years and they have been my go-to brand because you can rely on an Altra shoe to have a wide toebox. Altra has great options for both trail and road running, but I haven't found them to be the most stylish and really wanted to fit comfortably into one of the pairs my running friends were talking about.

Then, I got lucky. Last fall I was asked to help with product testing and when I saw the Brooks Ghost 15 on the list I quickly put my name next to it in the spreadsheet to claim it. I figured since I wouldn't be spending my own money on it it would be worth trying even if it didn't end up being a good fit.

But they fit perfectly and they became my favorite. I typically find that my toes feel cramped in traditional running shoes and most casual shoes as well.

While I mostly run trails, I also do some road running in these shoes and I also love them as my everyday shoes—since mine are white I started wearing them with everything. Admittedly, they do have a well-cushioned thick sole since they are meant for long-distance road running so they aren’t exactly minimalistic. However, that doesn’t bother me and even if I weren't a runner I would still wear these.

A year later they're a bit dirty (whisper it—I even put them in the washer) but I don’t feel like they've worn much and they're still comfortable. I love wearing these for traveling since they are great for walking around airports and sidewalks when exploring, but are also plenty comfortable to wear in flight.

There is a newer model out now which means the 15 can be found for under $100 so I highly suggest jumping on that if you have wide feet. I believe they offer a wide model but I have the basic model and they still fit great.

Stock is limited but Amazon has both the men's and women's under $100, and REI has limited sizing of the women's for $100 and change.

I love the Max Cushioning Eite 2.0 walking shoes from Skechers, which have similar amounts of cushioning and bounce to the Hoka Bondi 8 and are even comparable to the Brooks Glycerin Max, without the Brooks price tag. I gave this pair of Skechers one of the top spots in my selection of the best walking shoes, because it outperformed all other shoes from Skechers I've tested this year.

The Skechers Max Cushioning Elite 2.0 can normally be found for $100, which is already very reasonable and half the price of some other shoes in the guide. In this early Black Friday deal, many sizes are reduced by 20% (a little over $20).

I rarely see both styles go on sale at the same time, but both the white/pink colorway and the lavender/blue still have plenty of stock available. I rated these shoes 4.5 out of 5 stars when I tested them early this year. If you're looking for a high-stack shoe, but don't want to fork out $140-$200 for something from Hoka or Brooks, then the Sketchers Max Cushioning Elite could be just what you're looking for. It's not a carbon copy of shoes from those brands, but it definitely offers similar levels of comfort and bounce as shoes twice the price.

I still wear my pair regularly, rotating with other, more expensive favorites, and I honestly can't tell the difference in quality. It's a great everyday shoe and one I recommend if you work on your feet all day.

I tested my pair of Merrell Moab Speed 2 hiking shoes in the spring of this year, and I still reach for them every time my route takes me off-road. I tested a lot of walking shoes in 2024, but this pair stood out from the pack and I gave it one of the top spots in my best walking shoes guide.

The Moab Speed 2 cost $140, but the price has dropped to under $105 for both men's and women's shoes at the REI outlet store. These are water-resistant shoes and are great for the sort of uneven terrain you find on trail walks. It was extremely muddy underfoot when I first took these shoes out, and the deeply-lugged Vibram outsole kept me upright on many rambles through slick muddy fields.

Why is this pair worth your hard-earned dollars? It has built-in protection over the toe and heel to protect you from bumps and brambles on the trail. The upper provides a fairly rigid cradle for your foot, which is desirable in a hiking shoe as it can help prevent your foot from rolling on uneven terrain. It's also quite light for a hiking shoe.

The outsole has three well-designed sections, with deep lugs on the heel and forefoot for traction while going up and down hills. Between these two sections, there is a Lightweight FlexPlate, which gives rigidity under the arch of the foot.

When I tested these, I particularly liked the heel tab, which made it easy to get the shoes on, and the textured design of the laces, which meant that once they had been tied, they wouldn't slip undone again while walking. They're water-resistant—able to handle a rain shower or some damp grass — but don't go putting your foot in a stream if you value dry feet.

I'm a wellness writer and this is the best thing I did for my health in 2024

If you pay attention to wellness trends, you probably already know about the Oura Ring, a ring with sensors that provide insights into your sleep, fitness and overall health. The shiny band, often worn on the index finger, has been seen on celebrities including Prince Harry and Jennifer Anniston, and with more than 2.5 million sold worldwide you may have even spotted one in the wild.

I was keen to see if the Oura ring lived up to the hype so, I reached out to the company’s PR and was sent an Oura Ring Generation 3 to try. This was given to me as a press gift, but after six months of near-constant wear, I can genuinely say that I would happily spend my own money on it.

I've tried other wearables (including the Apple Watch which I think is, well, a bit boring) but this is the only one I can see myself sticking with. The Oura has impressed me in so many ways, but here are the highlights—and one minor complaint, because nothing's perfect.

+ The ring is comfortable to wear

It's impossible not to gush about the Oura ring's gorgeous design. The ring is a thick band made from titanium, with tiny sensors on the inside that pick up health data. When it's on your finger, you'd never know it was a piece of tech, it just looks like jewelry. The ring should be worn round the clock to get the most out of it, but it's extremely comfortable and doesn't interfere with your life. It's waterproof too, so you can keep it on to shower, while you wash up, or even swim.

+ It knows how ready you are to tackle the day

The ring is constantly collecting data and sending it to the Oura app. While the data is broken down into sections, it also gives you a "readiness score" out of 100. This is my favorite feature and I use it every day to help me work out when to be more active, and when to take it easy and rest.

+ It tells you a lot about your sleep patterns

The Oura ring is a highly accurate sleep tracker that tells you everything from how much deep sleep you're getting, to how a nap can recharge you. I've particularly enjoyed learning about my chronotype, in simple terms that's whether you're a night owl or early bird. The clever bit is that Oura works out your type and suggests the perfect sleep schedule for you.

+ It offers fantastic women's health features

Finally, let's talk about periods. I used to track my cycle using a paper diary, which seemed like a fine way to keep tabs on things, but Oura’s cycle tracking feature is a serious upgrade. The ring spots when your period is on the way by monitoring changes in your body temperature. It also tells you how your body reacts to different menstrual phases. For example, it reminds you to make the most of that magical time of the month—the follicular phase—when you feel unstoppable.

- The battery life

My only quibble with the Oura Ring is the battery life. Although Oura says my model should last seven days, I have to charge mine every three to four days. It's a bit of a faff, but certainly not a sticking point, especially when it only takes about 20 minutes to charge.

This is the best walking shoe deal I've seen all year, with up to 56% off the men's Terrex Free Hiker Low at Amazon. This is an even bigger discount than I saw on Amazon Prime Day, where there was a 51% discount on the women's Adidas Terrex Free Hiker, which ended up being my standout shoe deal of the sale.

When I tested these Adidas shoes, the waterproofing was something else. None of the other walking shoes I've tested can hold a candle to the waterproofing of the Terrex Free Hiker Low, although several models are designed for hiking and also feature a Gore-Tex layer. These are the only truly waterproof walking shoes I've found so far.

When I tested these shoes, I found them to be slightly heavier than some of the other walking shoes in the guide, and the rigidity in the upper means that they took me a few days to break in. However, this is standard for trail shoes, which are built to protect your feet, and when compared with the other trail shoes I've tried, they offer a nice middle ground. While the midsole is not quite as pillow-soft as that on the Hoka Bondi 8, they are still more comfortable than a serious hiking shoe like the Merrell Moab Speed 2. I rated these shoes 4/5 stars overall, earning them a place near the top of my best walking shoe guide.

There's one piece of equipment that can make or break a walking expedition: your shoes. Wear something too flimsy and you risk getting stung by nettles or twisting an ankle. Wear something too clunky, and you can feel like your feet are dragging you down and getting overheated.

Why I love the Danner Trail 2650 shoes

I don't like hiking boots. They make me feel heavy-footed and clumsy and they often cause overheating. Plus, I hate the fiddly speed hook system you find on most hiking boots; I've seen plenty of other hikers take a tumble because they've caught the lace of one shoe on the speed hook of the other.

Hiking shoes don't have these problems, but they often don't feel as sturdy or rugged. That's not the case with the Trail 2650. I visited the French Alps in October this year and did several hikes along rugged, mountainous trails and they were the ideal companion.

Wet weather meant that the terrain was very damp, but the shoes kept my feet bone-dry, despite only being billed as "water resistant". The construction of the shoe also kept my foot from overheating, thanks to ventilating materials in the upper and the insole.

I found that the Vibram® 460 Outsole was brilliant for grip, helping me feel sure of my footing even on scree-covered trails. This is down to the clever, multi-directional lugs (bits of rubber on the shoe's underside) which found traction on slippery surfaces. I was so confident in my footing, that I strapped my 8-month old son onto my back without worrying about trips and falls.

The shoe also has a TPU shank, which keeps it rigid. This an important feature in a good hiking shoe; it means that your foot has a solid platform that protects it from sharp objects and uneven ground. It should also provide some longevity for the shoe, helping it to keep its original shape.

This is coupled with an external heel counter, which conserves the shape and rigidity of the back of the shoe, without causing any heel rubbing.

If you're looking for an everyday walking shoe, I'd recommend this Skecher's model instead. It's a pillow-soft shoe, which is great for urban, city environments.

All hikers know that a good reusable water bottle is the foundation of your gear (you can't go anywhere if you're dehydrated). But for some reason, several of my outdoorsy friends still buy their water by the liter in single-use plastic bottles, or, even worse, refill their single-use plastic bottles and risk chemical leaching.

How to choose a water bottle for hiking

When looking for a reusable water bottle I'm always very aware of the weight. Plastic options like the CamelBak tend to be lighter (and cheaper) while steel models will be a bit heavier.

However, steel bottles will be able to keep your drink at its ideal temperature. Plus, they tend to be more robust, so they can take a few bashes if you're scrambling over rocks. That might make them a better option for most hikers, but I prefer my CamelBak for everyday use.
