I've had the privilege of testing out the past two generations of Nike Peagasus 41, and have featured both as the best Nike shoe in my guide to best walking shoes.

They're excellent all-rounders, suitable for walking and running, benefiting from 41 generations of Nike product development.

My dad wore the first generation of Peg to win races in his early 20s, and I wear my pair mostly for walking longer distances over hard surfaces, but for the odd run as well.

So, why is the Pegasus such a good shoe? It's well cushioned, and pairs this with great energy return and bounce. I usually go for a max-stack shoe (think, Hoka), but the Pegasus achieves the plush feeling underfoot that I love, without raising you too high into the air.

This makes it great for the walker or runner looking for something in the Goldilocks zone: not too chunky and not too thin.

I’d also call the Pegasus a design classic, even when modernized and updated for a new generation. It’s got a sleek yet retro vibe that I love and you can wear it with a casual outfit and it won't look weird. I've paired mine with a maxi skirt and it somehow still fit the aesthetic.

So, if you're looking for a high-performance running shoe, or something comfy but classic to loaf around in, the Pegasus 41 has you covered.

If you've been holding off getting a pair of Nike Pegasus 41s, now might be the time to buy, with the most significant reduction I've ever seen. You can get the Peg 41 in the Hyper Violet colorway for an astounding $83.99 in the spring sale at Dick's Sporting Goods.

I'm a fully paid-up member of the Nike fan club, with the Pegasus 41 featuring as the best Nike shoe in my guide to best walking shoes. I also tested its predecessor, the Peg 40, and was equally impressed with its high performance, energy return and comfort for both running and walking.

When I tested the Pegasus 41, I was impressed with the energy return, cushioning and bounce. I like a max-stack shoe and although the Peg doesn't quite fall into this category, they are as plush underfoot as some of the most cushioned shoes I've tested.

I like the sleek, retro look of the Peg and firmly believe it'll never go out of style. If you're on your feet all day or have to frequently adapt to changing surfaces underfoot, the Pegasus 41 will keep you comfortable throughout.

Nike's long-running Pegasus line is always a reliable choice when you want a comfortable, versatile pair of sneakers. I had the chance to test the Nike Pegasus 41 when it came out last year, and it earned itself a spot in my guide to the best walking shoes as the best Nike walking shoe.

The main downside of the pair I was sent to test was the white colorway, meaning the upper got marked almost immediately. There will be no such problems with the all-black pair on sale at REI. Dirt won't show up on the Black/Black/Anthracite (also pretty much black) colorway.

The comfort level of the Pegasus 41 is right at the top of the scale. It's designed for road running so the sole has springy cushioning with plenty of energy return and a breathable mesh upper.

I didn't notice a huge difference between the Pegusus 40 and 41, but Nike says the shoe is lighter, and the upper is engineered to allow for more airflow. As far as I was concerned, the 41 lived up to the reputation of the Pegasus as a reliable do-it-all shoe.

It's rare to see Black Friday discounts on shoes in the same year that they're released, but this year Nike has knocked 30% off some styles. Specifically, it's reduced the Nike Pegasus 41s, which are some of the best walking shoes I've tested.

You can get the women's shoes in a black-and-white colorway for $98 and the men's shoes in black, white and red for the same price. Several other styles also carry discounts, but stock is more spotty, so you might not find your size in the style you want. To get the discount add the coupon code "BFRIDAY" at checkout.

Additionally, you can find the previous generation, the Women's Nike Pegasus 40, for $89.99 at Footlocker. The men's shoe remains at the full price of $130. There's not much difference between the 40 and the 41 in terms of performance, so if you don't care too much about having the latest shoe, get the 40 rather than the 41 to save yourself $8.

I like the Nike Pegasus because it's a reliable, well-cushioned shoe with a retro look that never goes out of style. It's been around since the 1980s and over that time Nike has honed the design to create the perfect shoe well-cushioned without being overly stacked, a neutral ride to suit most gaits, and responsively bouncy, giving you good energy return whether you're walking or running.

If you like a retro-looking sneaker that you can use for walking and road running, the Nike Pegasus 40 is hard to beat. Plus, with the latest generation just released, you can bank on some great discounts on the remaining stock of the Pegasus 40—if you can find some.

Easier said than done. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for weeks now and turned up nothing—until now.

There are deals on both the men's shoes and the women's shoes at Dick's Sporting Goods, currently discounted by up to $71, depending on your size and the style you choose.

Nike shoes have a slightly looser fit than other brands I've tried, so you may want to buy in your size or a half-size down. I'm a UK 6 in Hoka and Brooks shoes, but I can comfortably wear a 5.5 in Nike's sizing. They are, however, quite narrow shoes, so it's worth measuring your foot and exploring the width options if you are unsure.

The Nike Pegasus 40 was at the top of my best walking shoe guide until I discovered the Hoka Bondi 8, but the Pegasus 40 now holds the title of the best Nike walking shoes I've tested. I'm not easily impressed, but know what I want from a walking shoe and happily rated them a 4.5 out of 5 stars: just a hair's breadth away from perfection.

The only thing to note is that the Pegasus 40 is a neutral shoe, so it's unsuitable for those looking for more arch support. If you overpronate, consider a stability shoe like the Nike Structure range or the React Miler.

Nike Training Club's short workouts dropped exclusively to Netflix on December 30th, 2022. As a personal trainer, I was intrigued to get my hands on it. Home workouts on Netflix — I mean, what's not to love about streaming workouts and favorite shows in one place? 

Whether you enjoy full-body cardio, strength programs, or Vinyasa yoga flow, the Nike Training Club is now available to all Netflix subscribers. The addition allows you to stream exclusive fitness video content from your account, and it's suitable for all fitness levels and abilities.

You can even categorize the workouts by time (10, 20, or 30 minutes) and exercise style, meaning anyone who enjoys at-home workouts without equipment or using weights like a set of the best adjustable dumbbells can benefit. 

I decided to test some of the Nike fitness workouts to see how they compare with offerings widely available on other fitness apps and YouTube. Read on to find out if Nike Training Club on Netflix is worth it and who might enjoy it. 

What is the Nike Training Club on Netflix?

Whether you prefer bodyweight exercises or dumbbell workouts, the Nike Training Club (NTC) gives members access to various lengths and intensities taught only by Nike trainers — 10-minute bodyweight workouts, 20-minute Vinyasa yoga, or a 30-minute dumbbell HIIT workout — joining the club gets you everything. 

According to Nike, the NTC is your "ultimate training partner, providing outstanding guidance, inspiration, and motivation." Moreover, the carefully curated collection is "made for everybody and every body." Awesome. 

There are currently four categories of workouts available, all containing a library of sessions varying in difficulty and length, with the collection likely to continue growing:

• Kickstart Fitness with the Basics
• Two Weeks to a Stronger Core
• Fall in Love with Vinyasa Yoga
• HIT & Strength with Tara
• Feel-Good Fitness

In the name of journalism (and let's be honest, to feed my fitness appetite), I cherry-picked several workouts, rolled out one of my favorite yoga mats for home workouts, and got started. Here's my verdict. 

1. It's a bit cheesy

As a trainer, I understand how important it is to bring the energy when instructing a workout. After all, any personal trainer or fitness instructor's job is to motivate, encourage, and push. However, there were moments it all got a bit much.

This is down to personal preference. For others, this could be the much-needed relief they need during a particularly tortuous HIIT workout for fat loss, cardio, or strength training programs. But for me? It was a bit much. 

That said, the Nike trainers are super knowledgeable, energetic, and informative (but more on that later). A standout quote to look out for during one exercise — "I like to own all of my real estate." Your body, I presume?

2. You can't filter by difficulty or equipment type

We can expect more content to drop, and the existing categories are super helpful. Yet, the Nike Training Club collection could categorize workouts by difficulty and whether or not you need equipment. 

If you're a beginner looking for a beginner's workout, 'Kickstart Fitness with the Basics' has everything you need to start. But the outcome could have been clearer for sections like 'Feel-Good Fitness,' where you'll need to skim each session to see how challenging it might be. 

It's a minor gripe, but even a difficulty rating added to workout descriptions could save people time deciding if a workout is suitable or challenging enough. As a caveat, Nike is trying to be inclusive across all their exercises, so perhaps this is intentional.

3. The yoga classes were my top choice

Whether flipping my down-dog or testing hip flexibility in Frog pose, I swear by yoga for helping improve strength, stability, and mobility. I'm really pleased Nike has added a whole section dedicated to Vinyasa, taught by super-knowledgable Nike master trainer and yoga teacher Jonah Krest. 

I tried '10-minute yoga: runner's flow,' which had the overall feel of a workout recovery session, and a more traditional 20-minute Vinyasa flow. The classes are great for tight hips, increasing range of motion, or as an introduction to yoga. 

However, if you already have a dedicated practice, you might find the current sessions too basic and could benefit from a yoga platform with longer, stronger sessions like inversions. But it's still a solid addition to the NTC. 

The runner's flow feels like a runner's interpretation of a Yin class more specific to a warm-up or cool-down, while the Vinyasa flow adopts a punchier, powerful flow with delicious Pigeon pose holds, twists, flowy side bends and poses to test core strength. Hopefully, we'll see more additions soon. 

4. The workouts are varied and well-produced

I started with '10-minute bodyweight burn: upper-body basics' from 'Kickstart Fitness,' which offers a brilliant beginner workout for learning foundational movement patterns. I also tested the more advanced 'Total Body Ladder,' a 10-minute dumbbell workout found in 'Feel Good Fitness.' 

The concise routine gradually adds exercises like thrusters, renegade rows, and standing presses, increasing repetitions over 10 minutes. I highly recommend this one; it's a fiery full-body workout and shoulder torcher that could help build lean mass and muscle endurance.

Each video workout includes a brief warm-up and cool-down, and the instructors are informed and engaging, offering plenty of clear cues for improving your form in an accessible way.

They move through the workout alongside you, and each video features two instructors to perform the movement — offering two different difficulty levels — but the ones I tried could've benefitted from utilizing it further. 

For example, don't expect many cues on how to make an exercise harder. Again, accessibility is at the forefront, and rightly so, but using one person to scale up considerably and one instructor to scale down would open up workouts even more as users progress.

Should you use Netflix's Nike Training Club?

Small grumbles aside, you've got a bit of everything suitable for however you like to train — from agility workouts to building strength using shoulder bodyweight exercises — it just takes a bit of exploring to find something ideal for you. 

Expect the catalog of workouts to grow throughout 2023. But if you can't wait or didn't find the Netflix-based workouts to do the trick, there are plenty of other ways to train at home. 

For instance, you can grow your glutes with this bodyweight workout, practice how to do sit-ups properly to build core strength, or boost your wellbeing by learning how to meditate. 

Part of the joy of running is that it’s a sport you can do almost anywhere, without needing much kit. However, it is important to invest in some of the best running shoes for men, because not only will a great shoe protect your body from the impact of the sport, it can also increase your enjoyment of it.

I have been running around 50 miles a week for the past six years and so have tested a lot of running shoes, including all of the biggest new shoes launched in recent years.

In that period the price of running shoes has rocketed, and many shoes have also become more specific in their purpose, whether that’s being built purely for racing or just for easy miles. 

In this round-up I’ve aimed to buck those trends by sticking to durable, versatile shoes that are suitable for all kinds of runs and offer great value. 

Best running shoes for men

The Puma Velocity Nitro 2 is a comfortable, durable shoe with an exceptional outsole for a road running shoe, which means you can also use it on light trails without worrying about grip.

The midsole uses two layers of foam, the top one being Puma’s soft and bouncy Nitro material, which creates a ride that protects the legs on easy and long runs but also has enough pop for faster efforts too. 

At full price the Velocity Nitro 2 is good value given the quality of the shoe and materials used, but it’s also a shoe that regularly features in sales for a lot less than three figures, at which point we’d advise stocking up on a couple of pairs.

The Reebok Floatride Energy 4 is one of the most underrated running shoes available, easily outperforming many shoes that cost twice as much. It's a versatile daily sneaker that has a firmer ride than other options on this list but still has enough cushioning to keep you comfortable on long runs. 

Some runners might prefer a softer ride, but the firmer midsole on the Floatride Energy 4 makes it more stable than squishier shoes, and the shape of the shoe means that you roll naturally through your footstrike.

The Ghost 15 is the latest in an incredibly popular line of shoes from Brooks and the reason for that popularity is evident as soon as you step into it, with the plush upper and cushioned midsole hugging the foot.

It’s a shoe that almost encourages you to get out and run, which reduces the impact of pavement-pounding for regular city runners. At 12mm, the drop of the Ghost 15 is higher than most shoes, which can lessen the strain on your calves.

This design won’t suit all runners so if you’ve previously used 4-8mm drop shoes it might take some adjusting to. I’d also say it’s worth seeking out a bargain on the older Brooks Ghost 14 model if you can, as although the 15 offers some minor improvements the shoes are broadly similar.

The Pegasus is another very long-running shoe line that has been popular with runners of all types for nigh-on four decades. The latest version is the best Pegasus in several years, having become lighter and more versatile than the Pegasus 37 and 38 while still being comfortable.

Durability is central to the Pegasus 39’s appeal, with the thick outsole and long-lasting React foam midsole ensuring you can use it for many hundreds of happy miles. It’s also a shoe that’s always available in a sale somewhere, and during Nike’s own sales it regularly drops to around half its RRP.

The Brooks Glycerin line has always been the last word in comfort, and if you step into the Glycerin 20 to try them on we’ll wager you’ll find them very hard to take off again.

The plushly-padded upper is paired with a nitrogen-infused midsole that’s not only soft and protective, but also responsive enough to help you bounce through longer and faster runs.

While the Glycerin 20 is primarily a cushioned shoe for easy runs, it does offer enough versatility for your daily training, and it is a long-lasting shoe with a thick outsole that grips well on slick pavements through the winter.

If you have been told you overpronate when running, which means your foot rolls excessively inwards upon landing, then a stability shoe can help counter this on the run.

The Puma ForeverRun Nitro uses subtle stability features like a wide heel base, a large heel clip, and a mix of foams where a firmer material acts as a frame to keep your foot level. 

It's a supportive shoe with a high stack of comfortable cushioning, and the outsole grips well on wet roads and light trails, meaning it's a good option for those who like to hit park paths and dirt tracks during runs.

Key running shoe terms

Offset: The offset or heel-toe drop is the difference in the amount of material under the heel and forefoot of the shoe. This is usually measured in millimeters.

Outsole: This is the layer of rubber on the bottom of the shoe responsible for making contact with the ground. Full rubber outsoles that cover the entire base of the shoe provide more grip and durability but add weight. 

So, many brands now just add rubber in key impact areas around the heel and forefoot. Shoes mainly built for training will have more rubber on the outsole, while racing shoes have minimal outsole to reduce weight.

Midsole: The midsole is the foam section of a running shoe found between the upper and the outsole. This is responsible for providing cushioning and support.

Insole: Often removable, insoles sit inside your shoe on top of the footbed. Your feet sit on top of these thin slips of material. Some brands make their insoles plush and spongy to provide extra cushioning, while many contour them to cradle the feet comfortably and minimize movement mid run. 

Upper: This is the material that wraps around the top of your foot. Found on top of the midsole, it is often made from fabric or mesh. 

FAQs

The biggest selling point of the Nike Air Zoom Structure 24 is their versatility; when it comes to running, there’s very little they can’t do. 

This is largely down to their neutral ride and cushioned-yet-reactive sole, which combine to provide comfort and performance no matter the distance – as one of our tried and tested best running shoes for men, would you expect any less? Their sleek, understated design looks good too, so they can double up as streetwear if you really want to get your money’s worth. 

A “crash pad” (softer section of foam) in the heel of the midsole offers a bit more give, encouraging a smooth transition from heel to toe, and the reasonable 8mm offset or drop will suit heel and midfoot strikers alike. So, if you’re a newcomer wondering how to get into running, these sneakers could be a good place to start. 

Their cushioned ankle and tongue round off a plush upper that cradled my feet comfortably, with a molded heel locking them into place so I never fell victim to blisters. However, this feature is responsible for the shoes losing a few points too; the added padding meant my feet overheated in warm weather and increased the overall weight of the shoes. Tipping the scales at 11oz (312g) they’re on the heavier side as far as running shoes go, and I felt these extra ounces on longer runs. 

However, it does pick up points for its robust feel, with a hardened rubber outsole laid on top of the soft foam midsole to improve the shoes’ durability. And, while we’re yet to see how they stand the test of time, we can say the sole looked as good as new after more than 30km of test runs. 

So, if it’s an all-rounder you’re after, you can’t go far wrong with the Nike Air Zoom Structure 24.

Nike Air Zoom Structure 24: price and features

The Nike Air Zoom Structure 24 can be bought for $130 in the US or £109.95 in the UK via the Nike website – marginally lower than many of its direct competitors. They can also be bought from a wide range of online stores, with many offering discounted rates.

Don’t expect vibrant colorways like the Saucony Men's Ride 15 though. There are only two available: black and white, or old royal blue, black and racer (in layman’s terms, blue, black and white). 

When it comes to features, Nike promises “cushioned responsiveness” – two terms that have previously been at odds with one another. To achieve this, it has a thick wedge of soft foam for a midsole, but under the ball of the foot there is a Nike Zoom Air unit (a cushioning system made from pressurized air and tightly stretched fibers, designed to provide a more explosive reaction). 

In contrast, a “crash pad” in the heel offers a softer feel than the rest of the foam midsole, with the intended purpose of encouraging a smooth heel-to-toe transition with each stride – something heel strikers will appreciate. Nike developed this feature following feedback from hundreds of runners, and the brand says it means the shoe offers more support for runners with a tendency to excessively overpronate (where their ankles collapse inwards).

The mesh upper is designed for durability, as too is the hard rubber outsole that forms a protective layer between the foam midsole and the ground. This has horizontal grooves in the forefoot to improve flexion, while vertical grooves along the outer edge of the outsole are designed to add stability. 

To round off the features, a softer lining around the heel and ankle has been added to discourage socks from bunching up when you run, there is padding around the heel and tongue for comfort, and a molded heel hugs the foot securely. 

Nike Air Zoom Structure 24: design and technology

As per usual, Nike are guilty of complicating matters by assigning fancy names to their features – looking at you, Zoom Air units. But, now you know what they mean, it’s time to see if the brand’s claims hold water.

I tested these sneakers by putting them through a range of runs, racking up over 30km with a succession of interval sessions, speedwork, fast 5ks, recovery runs, easy miles and longer distance jogs. During this time, I was impressed by the cushioning and crash pad, which complemented our natural stride. 

The sole wasn’t as soft as other everyday running shoes I’ve tried, providing a fairly reactive feel well-suited to pushing the pace on middle-distance runs (around the 10k mark). 

This was partly down to the Nike Zoom Air unit under the ball of the foot, which offered a noticeable firmness when I pushed off through the forefoot – something I appreciated when aiming for a faster pace. However, with each step on hard surfaces like tarmac I could lightly feel the shape of the Zoom Air unit under my forefoot, creating a subtle but unpleasant lumpy feel. 

The upper is accommodating, with the plush padding around the ankle and tongue making them incredibly comfortable from the get-go. Nike’s “Dynamic Fit” lacing system worked well to tighten the sides of the shoe around my narrow feet with minimal bunching of the mesh around the toe box – a common problem – and the molded heel locked my foot into place to prevent any unwanted movement or rubbing during runs. 

However, we do have to question Nike’s claims that it has created an “airy upper with breathability right where you need it”. We found our feet overheated on faster runs, or when the weather grew warmer, with the ample padding proving stifling at higher temperatures.

Still, for slower-paced sessions, or in mild conditions, running in these shoes was an enjoyable and comfortable experience. 

Nike Air Zoom Structure 24: fit, feel and comfort

The Nike Air Zoom Structure 24 is, overall, a very comfortable shoe. The “cushioned responsiveness” of the midsole provides a firm ride for a soft, everyday shoe, striking a nice balance between cushioning and reactiveness. The durable mesh upper offers an accommodating fit for wider feet, and the Dynamic Fit lacing system works well to tighten the shoe evenly if you require a narrower fit. 

The crash pad in the heel allowed us to settle into a natural striding motion, with a smooth heel-to-toe transition, and the molded, padded heel locked our feet securely into place immediately. So, if you want to get started straight away, you can comfortably wear these running shoes from the moment they arrive without the usual break-in period.

However, in our eyes, the shoe is let down by a couple of faux pas.

Firstly, the design isn’t as spry as most of its direct competitors (such as the Saucony Ride 15 and Asics Gel Nimbus 24). Weighing in at a comparably heavy 11oz or 312g, the bulky padding around the heel and tongue adds ounces while also causing our feet to heat up on faster runs.

Our second small gripe, which may well be subjective, is the prominence of the Zoom Air unit. This clever technology has been present and popular in Nike shoes for decades, providing a firmer, more reactive section in the sole of the brand’s footwear.

Yet, in the Structure 24, we found it didn’t quite sit right. When running on roads and less forgiving terrain, we could feel the unit under our forefoot. And, while some people may enjoy the added responsiveness when compared to softer foam midsoles, we weren’t fans of the somewhat lumpy feel.

Nike Air Zoom Structure 24: support

The Nike Air Zoom Structure 24 is a neutral shoe with an 8mm drop from heel to toe. The cushioning feels supportive yet responsive on medium distance runs (between 5-15km) and is able to turn its hand to faster runs thanks to the firm Zoom Air unit in the forefoot – though we did find this slightly lumpy.

The foam midsole is built up around the instep of the foot to support runners with a tendency to overpronate (where your ankle collapses inwards), providing additional stability, and the outsole was brilliantly grippy on all terrains I tested it on (from tarmac to trails to wet grass). 

Nike Air Zoom Structure 24: user reviews

The Nike Air Zoom Structure 24 scores favorably with customers, earning a near-perfect 4.6 out of five stars from around 50 reviews on the brand's website. 

Buyers say they like the clean, simple design, and many say they enjoy wearing the shoes for everyday activities or active jobs where they're on their feet for much of the day. 

Runners enjoyed the level of cushioning on offer and several feel the shoe offers optimal comfort. However, some say they find the sole too soft.

Verdict

The Nike Air Zoom Structure 24 is a versatile everyday running shoe offering out-the-box comfort and a cushioned yet responsive ride, ideal for faster mid-long distance runs. They’ll see you through easy miles and recovery runs too, though we did find they felt slightly sluggish towards the latter stages due to their heavier (11oz or 312g) design. 

The durable mesh upper is accommodating and, twinned with the hard wearing rubber outsole, gives the shoes a robust feel likely to stand the test of time. The forefoot feels lightly lumpy on harder surfaces like tarmac due to the Air Zoom unit in the midsole, but this does offer a firmer run than most everyday trainers making them better suited to runners who enjoy upping the pace every once in a while.

If you're after a more responsive ride, try the Hoka One One Rocket X. With their carbon plate, they provide plenty of energy with each step and feel like they're doing a lot of the work for you – perfect for chasing down your personal bests. 

Brooks Ghost 13

A solid everyday sneaker needn't cost an arm and a leg. The Brooks Ghost 13 is a great option for beginners, with our tester finding it to be an "oh-so-soft and smooth road running shoe. You can also grab a bargain if you keep an eye out online, with prices plummeting in some retailers' sales. It's by no means a fast shoe, but won't let you down as you rack up easy miles.

The Nike Metcon 7 is available to buy now directly from Nike and third-party retailers such as sportsshoes.com for £114.99 in the UK and $140 in the US, although other retailers might frequently offer better prices on the shoe during peak deals times. The shoe’s main distinguishing features include the React foam, borrowed from Nike’s running shoes, that provides better energy returns than any other Metcon shoes have before. This comes in handy for cardio workouts; however, the Metcon 7 won’t replace running shoes for pure cardio performance.

The Metcon 7 has a wide, flat heel with an inner plate that is said to distribute the weight from edge to edge, providing a steady platform for powerlifting moves such as barbell snatches and deadlifts. That stable platform also provides a solid landing surface for plyometric movements like burpees and box jumps, helping you stay on your feet. Nike has also revamped the rubber wraps around the shoes’ midsection, especially on the medial side, where the shoes' upper is more likely to be rubbed during rope climbs. There is also plenty of rubber on the outsole of the Metcon 7 for added traction on the tarmac and hard floors.

Another new addition is the tab-lock at the top of the tongue with a hook-and-loop closure that keeps the laces out of the way.

 Nike Metcon 7 review: Design

The Metcon 6 looked almost identical to the Metcon 5, so it’s refreshing to see that Nike Metcon 7 is significantly different from its predecessors. It’s wider, sturdier, and generally more brutalist than the sleek and modern Metcon 6. The overall design feels chunkier but not in an overwhelming way.

That said, the Nike Metcon 7 weighs 380 grams (men’s UK size 10) thanks to the ridiculous amount of rubber on the outsole. We’re not complaining, though: there is a reason why Nike included so much rubber, and that is to provide stable footing when lifting heavy. The rubber even runs up on the medial and lateral sides of the shoes to provide support in key areas.

Despite the chunky rubber outsole, the Nike Metcon 7 is surprisingly flexible, thanks to the grooves at the front of the outsole. This enables wearers to bend the shoes – and their foot – which enhances comfort levels and makes the Metcon 7 more ideal for sprint training.

The addition of the React foam makes running in the shoes an even more comfortable ordeal. Nike’s React foam is famous for its resilience and energy return, but it’s not quite as soft as the ZoomX foam used in most Nike racing shoes. We wouldn’t recommend the shoes for long-distance running, but this design is perfect for CrossFit, sprints, and HIIT workouts.

One of the best aspects of the Metcon 7 is the upper. It’s tough yet accommodating and provides support in all the right areas. The tongue is slightly padded, and the tab locks are a good addition, too, although the laces are not terribly long, so there is no need to use them unless for exercises that rub against the top of the shoes (e.g. rope climb).

 Nike Metcon 7 review: Performance

Speaking of exercises: the Nike Metcon 7 delivers on workout performance big time. The sole is extremely stable and the traction is just sublime. On hard floors, the Metcon 7 will turn you into an object no force can move!

We tried the Nike Metcon 7 in various workout situations that included heavy lifting, jumping and circuit training, yet there wasn’t an instance when we thought we would be better of wearing another pair of cross-training shoes. The shoes performed exceptionally well during explosive movements such as the barbell snatch and clean and jerk.

We haven’t had the chance to give rope climbing a try but taking into consideration the performance of the Metcon 7 in all other activities, we would be surprised if it didn’t do well there. The only criticism we can offer is that the rear of the upper is not quite firm enough to hold the heels in place when they move vertically. However, the actual platform under the heels is super wide which counterbalance this slightly.

Nike Metcon 7: Verdict

The Nike Metcon 7 is an awesome cross-training shoe and one that’s worth the asking price. There are cheaper workout shoes available for sure but by getting the Metcon 7, you can rest assured that you’ll invest in a pair of shoes that will not only perform well but maintain their performance over the long run.

Thanks to the React foam and the grooves on the outsole, the Metcon 7 won’t hold you back even if you have to do some cardio work during your workouts. Make no mistake, though: the Metcon 7 is not a running shoe, but it will do just fine for sprints and sessions on an air bike. Highly recommended! 

Nike Metcon 7 review: also consider

The slightly unusual-looking On Cloud X might be a better choice for those who do more cardio than heavy lifting. This unique product balances a great mix of features, making them ideal for use in all kinds of fitness activities, especially those constantly mixing up their workouts. 

One of Nike’s most popular workout shoes is, without a doubt, the Metcon series. In what is a portmanteau of 'metabolic conditioning’ (an intense type of workout combining strength and cardio training) the shoes’ name alone speaks volumes about how they should be used.

Offering everything a gym-goer would need from one of the best cross training shoes, the Nike Metcon range has traditionally always featured great heel stability, comfort and durability while ensuring there's plenty of room for maneuver in the forefoot. They are also still one of the most popular gym shoes out there despite being released in 2019.

The fifth version of Nike’s popular training shoe builds on that legacy with some new additional features in a bid to elevate the Metcon 4 shoe that came before it. However, do these updates really make a difference, and if so, is it for the better? This review will tell you just how well the Metcon 5 shoes perform and if, two years after release, they are still worth your hard-earned cash.

 Nike Metcon 5 review: Price

The Nike Metcon 5 were launched in July 2019 with an RRP of £114.95 / AU$190, however, they are still available to buy now and, better still, you should be able to pick them up at a discounted price, which makes them great value for money.

When they first hit the market, the Metcon 5 shoes were available in a choice of different colour-ways. However, since stock levels have reduced and Nike is phasing out the fifth generation, not all the colours are still available. 

Nike Metcon 5 review: Design

The first thing you’ll notice about the Metcon 5 is that they boast Nike’s iconic Durable Traction’ rubber tread on the outsole, which goes up into a point on the side of the shoe. While this makes for a unique design detail, they aren’t just about looking good. They have been designed to come in handy in activities like rope climbing, as it not only provides grip but prevents friction burn.

Another unique design feature can be found around the back, where you have a hard TPU heel stabilizer, which works to provide extra stability and hold around the base of the heel - ideal for activities such as weight lifting. Then, there’s a full-contact outsole, which gives you a smoother, more stable ride from heel strike to toe during quick movements, like short sprints.

However, what makes the Metcon 5 shoes’ design unique isn’t necessary to do with what you can see from the outside. Unlike the uniform cushioning density of its predecessor, the Metcon 5 shoes boast a dual-density removable insole. This basically means it is split into two halves - a soft and a firm. 

These two separate components have been molded together to offer better support throughout the shoe. You’ll find a firm and protective polyurethane material at the heel and then a soft PU foam cushioning at the forefoot. This works incredibly well in supporting your feet during a range of activities, from bodybuilding to high-intensity cardio training. 

Overall, we love the design of the Metcon 5. It’s minimal and streamlined, with a good range of colors on offer.

Nike Metcon 5 review: Features and Performance

The Metcon 5 shoes are unique to most gym shoes on the market as they don’t offer the flexibility of more all-rounded gym trainers. Instead, they have a greater focus on stability and support for hard knocks and heavy lifting thanks to a low, flat and wide heel. This creates a stable base for weighted exercises and is why the Metcon 5 shoes have become known as a great pair of weightlifting shoes.

Adding to this, the Metcon 5 shoes come bundled with something called Hyperlift inserts. These are like mini insoles that are placed inside the shoes to adjust the height under your heel. They add a substantial 8mm to the drop and by doing this, give better ankle support in heavy weights sessions.

This focus on weight lifting means the Metcon 5 shoes aren’t ideal for long runs. However, they are perfectly wearable for activities that require a mixture of short runs, jumps and fast-paced weighted exercises, such as HIIT and CrossFit workouts.

Despite the choice of firm materials used in this shoe, you’ll find that cushioning is decent throughout, meaning you can sprint for short distances and still feel like you have plenty of support. For example we wore them for a 1 hour squash session and found them to be more than adequate. Still, it’s not the same level you’d get from running shoes, of course, but it’s fit for purpose during more intense functional training. The toughened heel helps in these occasions, too, as it means impact shock is transmitted up to your legs upon heel strike.

The only problem we found during use is that the mesh upper isn’t as breathable as many other workout shoes on the market, which might be a problem if you’re working out outside on a hot summer’s day, or you simply get very sweaty feet. Thankfully, Nike addressed this on the new Metcon 6 shoes by adding in a mesh upper, so if it’s an important feature for you (say, perhaps you live in a hotter climate - lucky you!) then it might be worth investing in the newer and more expensive generation.

Nike Metcon 5 review: Verdict

The Nike Metcon 5 gym shoes are an excellent pair of trainers for those who find themselves doing more weighted workouts and the occasional HIIT class and want a good level of support from heel to toe. This is why they suit cross training so well and are our top pick for CrossFit fanatics. However, if you’re more of an all-rounder when it comes to fitness, and want a show that can support your needs in running, too, then the Metcon 5 probably won’t suit your needs.

On Cloud X

Using the same tech found in the brand’s race shoes, the Cloud X workout shoes by On are geared more towards general training and can handle everything from weightlifting and HIIT to CrossFit and short sprints. The other great thing is that they still have that super lightweight construction that On is known for, thanks to a knit-weave upper. Light and breathable, they maintain a good level of cushioning on the outsole, not only making them highly comfortable, but well placed to handle high impact training moves such as box jumps. 

Nike Metcon 6

There’s not much of a difference between the fifth and sixth generation Metcon shoes. To cut a long story short: you’re paying an extra £35 / $50 or so for the Metcon 6 just for a more breathable upper material, which should help keep you cool if you’re into long, intense and sweaty workouts. If this isn’t something that you’ll benefit from all that much, it’s probably worth sticking with Nike’s cheaper Metcon 5 kicks.

Tracking down a great Cyber Monday workout clothes deal might sound simple on the surface, but there’s a lot more to it than snatching the first discount you see. Feeling cozy and confident in your gym gear can make or break a workout, so it’s important you get it right. The word ‘burnout’ has been uttered a lot in the past year.  It comes as no surprise when many have been working longer hours and socialising less due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Now global sportswear brand Nike has taken action to counteract the pandemic’s negative impact on the mental health of workers at its Oregon headquarters.  The company -  famed for making some of the all-time best running shoes for men and best running shoes for women -  has shut the doors to the corporate office for a week, with staff. Staff have been told to take the week off and rest.  

The brand’s head of insights, Matt Marrazzo, announced the break on LinkedIn last week. He said Nike employees were told:  “Take the time to unwind, destress and spend time with your loved ones. Do not work.” 

Marrazzo added: “This past year has been rough - we're all human! and living through a traumatic event! - but I'm hopeful that the empathy and grace we continue to show our teammates will have a positive impact on the culture of work moving forward.” 

He also highlighted how Nike wants to show that the mental health of its employees is important towards the work of the company, writing: “It's not just a "week off" for the team... it's an acknowledgment that we can prioritize mental health and still get work done.”

The news was well received, with Marrazzo’s post having gained over 22,000 positive reactions at the time of writing. One LinkedIn user, a company CEO, commented: “So happy they [Nike] are prioritizing mental health. A mentally happy company is often overlooked but incomparable.”

Another user - a people strategist - posted: “Imagine if all companies valued mental health like this? Kudos to Nike for setting the example that prioritizing employees’ mental health & well being is an integral part of a positive & healthy culture.”

The move was also praised by Anna Freeman, CEO and founder of ZavFit, a health app for money stress.

Freeman told Fit&Well: "As a global icon, Nike is sending a clear message that 'being fit' isn't just about physical health, our mental health is just as important. 

"We know that mental health is one of the top concerns of boardrooms, hopefully other companies will follow in Nike's footsteps and 'Do The Right Thing' for their people. Nike has understood that this is essential to their bottom line. By encouraging staff to take a break and avoid burnout, they are protecting their most important asset, helping employees to stay feeling healthy and productive."

Nike’s move follows in the footsteps of companies such as dating app Bumble and social media tool Hootsuite, which have also instructed staff to take time out in order to recuperate from pandemic-related burnout.

It comes in the wake of a recent study carried out by Visier, which looked into the mental health epidemic that has escalated alongside the spread of the physical virus.

It found that 89% of employees have experienced burnout over the past year, and that 70% would leave the organization they currently work at for another offering resources to lessen the feeling of burnout.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), symptoms of burnout include feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion, increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job, and reduced professional efficacy. 6 tips for avoiding burnout at work

1. Rest – "To do this, we have to do something, anything, that occupies our whole mind while we are doing it. This could be phoning a friend you haven’t spoken to in a long while. It could be playing a sport or musical instrument or cooking. Find something that requires your whole attention and focus on doing that for a part of your day. This will give your mind a chance to rest."
2. Reflect – "When thinking about what to do with your time off, really try and home in on those things that you know will light you up. This can really help you to understand how best to spend your time and where best to direct your spending in order to boost your wellbeing. Rather than default to Netflix and chill, takeouts or online shopping, use the time to reflect on those activities that have made you really happy in the past."
3. Try Meditation - "Meditation techniques can help to reduce stress. Focusing on the rise and fall of your breath can train your attention to rest on the present moment instead of panicking about past mistakes or future uncertainties. It’s important to enjoy experiences while you actually live them, because distracted thoughts frequently spiral into uncontrollable obsessions with “what if?”. 4. Connect with nature - "Spending time in nature is great for mental health and cognitive performance. This becomes more difficult to achieve when living in a city or when in self-isolation at home, but there are still practical things we can do to get the benefits of nature. There are many free playlists that provide sounds of nature which can be an excellent calming background when studying. You can also bring nature inside by ordering indoor plants for your workspace."
5. Learn - "We should never lose sight of the important advantages of stress and anxiety. We experience negative emotions for a reason, and they often keep us away from major dangers. But when they become excessive or unproductive, we can learn to stay on top of them. Carefully reflecting on painful feelings and focusing on their possible advantages can prove that they’re not so terrifying after all."
6. Reset – "As we come into a new normal we will start to form new habits again. With the number one cause of mental health issues being money stress. Our top tip is to reset the way you think about your money. Are you using your spending with the intent to boost your wellbeing or are you spending simply to enjoy the act of spending. With your time to rest, focus on those areas of spending that could be the most meaningful to your wellbeing."

Nike believes that women of all backgrounds, body types, abilities and aspirations deserve the opportunity to participate comfortably in water sports - and we are totally on board for this.

This was reflected in an advert they released last year, which showed a woman, wearing a hijab, in the water with her daughter - teaching her how to swim. The advert starts with the mom telling her, "On the count of three, hold your breath. Ready?" 

As the daughter goes under the water, ready to take her first strides it shows women all over the world in the water - diving into pools, scuba diving, surfing and rowing. The advert then cuts back to the mom and little girl in the pool, showing her swimming away on her own, while her mom encourages her with three words: "Don't stop now!" 

Nike Swim has worked with Muslim Sisterhood, a creative community of women,  to showcase the new swimming range.

Wondering what the difference is between the Nike Metcon 5 and Metcon 6 - and, crucially, which ones are worth your cash? We're here to help!

The Metcon range by Nike are regularly ranked among the best cross training shoes. Recognised by athletes and CrossFit fanatics alike, it has become known as the shoe for delivering support, comfort and durability during intense exercise, especially workouts like circuit training and weightlifting.

The most recent, sixth addition to the Metcon range was released in summer last year. Named the Nike Metcon 6, the gym shoe hit shelves around a year after its predecessor, the Nike Metcon 5, boasting a few new design details such as a more breathable upper. 

In what we assume was based on the premise of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, both the Metcon 5 and the Metcon 6 look very similar. So much so that if it wasn’t for the new colorways and different price points, you’d find it pretty hard to tell them apart. 

With this in mind, we have pitted the two shoes head-to-head to see if the new and improved yet more expensive generation Metcon 6 is worth the extra dosh. Or if you should opt for the older Metcon 5 model instead and save yourself a pretty penny. We've rated the both on Design, Performance and Price to find which comes out king  or queen of the gym.

Design

What will strike you initially about the Metcon 5 and Metcon 6 gym shoes is that they look very similar when placed side-by-side. But that doesn’t mean they’re identical. Nike has responded to customer feedback and – due to it being mostly very positive – has kept things pretty much the same in the Metcon 6. 

The main difference is a new upper in the Metcon 6, which looks to solve issues in the Metcon 5 related to heat and moisture retention. It’s a new lightweight mesh material, which due to its perforated design, offers better breathability by allowing air to flow more easily. This helps to keep your feet cool, especially during long or intense workouts where you're more likely to be sweating. The downside here is that the mesh material isn’t really in keeping with the overall minimal design of the shoe, and looks kinda ugly in comparison to the Metcon 5’s upper.

The color options for the Metcon 6 aren’t quite as attractive as those in the Metcon 5, either. They’re more garish and a little too busy for our liking. There is, however, a “design your own” option, which allows you to customise the colour of your shoes for an extra £15. Still, this won't change the dotted aesthetics of the upper.

Design-wise, everything else between the Metcon 5 and the Metcon 6 has remained largely the same, including that revered Durable Traction extended outsole which has a rubber tread that wraps around the sides of the shoe to prevent friction burn during activities like rope climbing or side lunges. 

• WINNER: Metcon 5. Yes, the Metcon 6 has been given a breathability upgrade, but when it comes to design the minimal and more elegant-looking Metcon 5 just does it for us.  

Features and Performance

Both the Metcon 5 and the Metcon 6 utilise the same foam, midsole, and wide heel design meaning they feel almost identical on the feet. As we mentioned prior, the major difference is the upgraded mesh upper, which offers improved breathability for those times when you’re really going for it. Both shoes deliver in spades, whether doing burpees or barbell squats.

Essentially, the Metcon 6 will feel more comfortable to wear over longer periods and at higher intensities, saving you from getting that awful clammy feeling in the feet.

Other than that, both generations of shoes successfully deliver stability and support for heavy duty workouts, weight lifting and powerful sprints thanks to a low, flat and wide heel, which creates a stable base alongside a decent amount of cushioning. 

• WINNER: Metcon 6. The latest model has everything the Metcon 5 has but with the advantage of a more breathable upper to help keep you cool. 

Price

The Metcon 5 training shoes hit the market in July 2019 with a price of $130 in the US and £115 in the UK. However, they’ve come down in price since then and can be picked up for around $99 or £80. That’s including Nike’s official site and third-party stockists, such as Dick's Sporting Goods in the US and Wit-fitness in the UK.

The Metcon 6 launched in August last year with the same price. Because they're still relatively new, you’d be hard pushed to find them discounted anywhere right now, but do keep you eyes peeled for discounts and promo codes from third-party sellers. 

• WINNER: Metcon 5. You can grab a pair for $30 less than the Metcon 6, and if you’re not one for getting clammy feet during workouts, then this is going to be best value for you.

Verdict: Which one should you buy?

There’s not many similarities between the fifth and sixth generation Metcon shoes. To cut a long story short: with the Metcon 6, you’re paying an extra $30 for so for a more breathable upper material which should help keep you cool if you’re into long, intense and sweaty workouts, or exercising in warmer climes. 

If this isn’t something that you’ll benefit from all that much, it’s probably worth sticking with the Metcon 5 shoes, which will set you back about $99 or £80 and look a bit more stylish. 

Remember Back To The Future, and Marty McFly's self-tying Nike shoes? We're not quite there yet, but Nike appear to have come up with the next best thing. 

Sure to join the list of some of the best workout shoes around is the Nike GO FlyEase, a sports shoe which you can intuitively click into place rather than tie up. 

The shoe has a bi-stable hinge which is said to make it one of the first "hands-free shoes" ever made. To put it on, you simply place your feet in and press down on the heel, and the "tensioner" band secures your shoe in place. 

To take them off, you perform the motion of kicking your shoe off with the other foot, which pulls the hinge in the opposite direction and allows you to slip the shoe clean off. 

In a press release, Nike said: "Behind the shoe's smooth motion is a bi-stable hinge that enables the shoe to be secure in fully open and fully closed states.

"It's intuitive — easy on, easy off — and evidence of how design, innovation and engineering can meet to answer an ambitious North Star: the creation of a hands-free shoe."

The motion of kicking off your shoes at the heel is something we're all familiar with, and many of us have worn shoes down before their time, as they aren't really built for that sort of behaviour. Nike seem to have built a shoe that works with this in mind. 

It's sure to help those of us too lazy to tie our own shoelaces, but people with medical issues, such as joint problems like arthritis in the fingers or mobility issues preventing you from bending at the hips, now also have the option of a sports shoe built with them in mind.  

What is unclear is the performance capabilities of the shoe. At the moment, we're not sure if this is suitable for running, gym wear, one of the best cross training shoes or it's simply a lifestyle sneaker. If running shoes could be built like this (and remain secure and snug on the foot until it's time to take them off) it could be a game-changer for runners. As yet, Nike has not made it clear what kind of workout the shoes will be best suited for.

However, we'll have to wait until later in the year to find out. The Nike GO FlyEase has already been given to a select few Nike members, but most of us will have to wait until later this year. Each pair will retail for around $120, in black and pastel colorways.
