If I were going to run one final fitness race in 2025, I’d run this one

The Spartan World Championship weekend in Hvar, Croatia, offers sun, surf and a good sweat

Fitness racing has never been bigger and there are plenty of events to compete in. One that stands out—especially to me right now, sitting in rainy London—is the Spartan World Championship on the Croatian island of Hvar, held October 10-12.

The event, in its second year, holds both invite and qualifier-only elite competitions, and open-to-all 5K, 10K and 21km obstacle course races.

The unique courses make the most of the setting, with the 5K featuring three dips in the pristine waters of the beach resort, stretches along coastal trails and a run through the town.

And of course, there’s the signature spear throw, trying to make it stick in the target 25 feet away, as well as plenty of climbing, clambering and carrying whichever distance you sign up for.

The 5K Sprint distance features 20 obstacles, the Super sees you tackle 25 over 10K, while the Beast challenges you to overcome 30 obstacles across 21km.

You can watch the elite race from the inaugural event last year on YouTube to see what’s in store for the Sprint distance.

Racers in the open and age group categories run the same course, and while only a couple of open tickets are still available for the 5K event, there are more age group category tickets and greater availability for the longer races.

If you’re in race shape, either because you like to stay fit, or you’re enjoying the lasting effects of training for another event earlier in the summer, I can’t think of a better way to round out the year in style than an October sojourn to sunnier climes.

As I write this at the start of September, it’s a sunny 29℃/85℉. Come October 10-12th, when the event is held, a high of 22℃/72℉ is the average—bliss.

As well as watching the knockout format 100-meter obstacle sprint on the Saturday in the main square of the historic city, you can enjoy the delights of Hvar—a destination in its own right, with watersports aplenty, wine tours, cycling and hiking just some of the many ways to enjoy the last of the warm weather.

Find out more about the Spartan World Championship Weekend in Hvar, and if you can’t be there in person, you can watch all the action from the elite competition on Spartan’s YouTube channel.
