Rarely does a day pass when I don’t reach for one of my long-loop resistance bands.
This simple bit of exercise equipment, which is discounted in the Amazon Prime Big Deal Days sale, is one of the smartest investments you could make for your health and fitness.
It’s often the first thing I’ll reach for at the start of my workouts to prepare my body for action, or to simply ease stiffness in my neck and shoulders after a long day at work.
I’ve used it with virtually every client I’ve ever coached to unlock tight shoulders.
And since I first introduced my 75-year-old relative to its potential to reverse years of poor posture, it’s now the first thing he asks to borrow whenever he visits.
The name of the exercise that has worked wonders for my step father-in-law? Shoulder dislocations.
Don’t let the name put you off. Here I am demonstrating the move earlier in the year, as part of another shoulder routine I recommended to readers.

How to do shoulder dislocations with a resistance band
- Hold the band in front of your thighs with your arms straight and your palms facing you.
- Gently pull your hands apart to create tension in the band.
- Lift the band over your head.
- Maintaining tension in the band, bring your hands behind your body, until the taught band taps your behind.
- Reverse the motion to return to the start.
Bringing the band over your head and behind your body gently forces the socket joint in your shoulders to explore a range they rarely get asked to venture into.
As a result, the first few reps will feel especially sticky as the joint re-familiarizes itself with its full range of motion.
Take those first few reps slowly, giving your body a chance to adapt.
Pretty quickly your range will improve and you should feel a nice sensation as synovial fluid lubricates the inner workings of the socket, making it easier to pass overhead each rep.
As this move becomes easier, bring your hands closer together to add tension and challenge your shoulders to explore an ever greater range of motion.
