I tested the New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro V8 in 2024. It was my pick for the grippiest shoe in my best walking shoe guide for almost a year, only recently unseated by the Danner N45.

If you aren't too worried about having the latest release, the Hierro V8 is a great choice for a high-performance trail shoe.

It's suitable for running and walking on most terrains, and with discounts across all sizes and colorways on Amazon, you're sure to find a deal to suit you.

Remember, price varies by size and colorway on Amazon, so reductions aren't identical across the board. The most significant discounts can be found on wide-fit options, with standard-fit shoes typically around $100.

I don't usually enjoy wearing trail shoes. I find they tend to be unnecessarily heavy, which can make them feel clunky. Not so with the Heirro V8.

It's not as feather-light as a performance running shoe, but it is designed for easy miles over difficult terrain, striking a successful balance somewhere between protective and lightweight.

The outsole comes higher up the sides, front and back of the shoe than standard, offering a layer of protection against anything sharp you might encounter.

The main selling point is the rugged outsole. It has deep grooves and bumps that give you multidirectional traction on slippery surfaces. Perfect for those icy trips (pardon the pun).
