James Frew

Fitness Editor

James is the Fitness Editor for Fit&Well, covering strength training workouts and accessible ways to improve your health and wellbeing. Before joining the Fit&Well team in 2021, he was the Buyer's Guide Editor for the consumer technology website MakeUseOf, helping readers find the right products for their needs.

His writing career began in 2016 as a freelance technology journalist with bylines at MakeUseOf, Blocks Decoded, Lifewire, and Happiness. James has reviewed headphones, fitness trackers, and smartwatches, covered events like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), IFA, and Black Hat Europe, and was named Muck Rack’s Featured Journalist in February 2021.

James started taking his fitness more seriously after graduating from the University of Surrey with a BEng in Mechanical Engineering. But his interest in fitness, health, and wellbeing became a priority when he was diagnosed with a chronic illness in 2014. To cope with the changes, he started meditating daily in August of that year and hasn't missed a day since.

But the diagnosis also focused his attention on affordable ways to eat well, how to work out at home, and the most effective ways to build core strength. Over the years, James has also completed several 30-day yoga challenges, invested in a set of dumbbells, and has incorporated walking and exercise into his daily routine.

Alongside writing, he was a regular contributor to the Really Useful Podcast and a co-host for the Blocks Decoded podcast. James volunteers for Samaritans, a UK-based mental health charity outside of work, spends hours walking and exploring the city, and excitedly checks out each week's New Music Friday releases.
